Spent a day in York as part of a coach tour.
As we had eaten a hearty breakfast and dinner was on the horizon, we were looking for a snack type meal to keep us going.
It was a lovely day and there were tables outside but we opted for inside. It was ideal as we were seated across from the open door and got a nice breeze.
The young waiter who served us was lovely but the older guy, manager maybe?, was obviously not having a lovely day. We smiled and said something to him and got a "look". Maybe it was our accents! Neither knew nor cared.
The food was good. We both had just a starter which was not a problem. I had a large Yorkshire Pudding with Onion Gravy and I savoured every mouthful. Friend had the Black Pudding with Prune and Apple Sauce and she also savoured every mouthful. I had a bit and it was lovely. A glass of wine each added to the pleasure.
A family were at a nearby table and the waitress who served them was excellent with the little boy. Not in the least bothered by the mess he had made.
Despite the "grump" we enjoyed it. -

For a hungry individual a nice deal is a good catch and this place gave justice for it.
Saw the sign outside for fish and chips deals and as a guest I wanted to try the famous dish of England.
This place has a cool ambiance and really interest me of the design of the building. Looking outside this place looks like a house converted to a restaurant. And to make it better it's a great idea.
Food was great and the service was fast. For the deal that we had it was a good prize and as the saying goes "what you see is what you get.!" -

The main draw for Gert & Henry's is the ambiance. The building looks like it fell right out of Hogsmeade; wonderfully mishappen with slanted floors and ceilings.
The food is average pub fare. It's a bit pricey in general, but normal for York. You can always come in for a pint and some chips, and then grab a tasty burger or dog from Little Mac's outside. -

I came during the holidays and had their Sunday roast special (kind of like a Thanksgiving meal) and it totally hit the spot. The beef wasn't too dry or tough and with the gravy it was very satisfying. I had missed Yorkshire puddings sooo much and it was comforting to have them again.
The potatoes were seasoned well and the carrots were plenty soft, as you'd expect from all that steaming. We had some other veggie dishes that I don't really remember now, since my main focus was the meat, gravy, and pudding (not to be mistaken with pudding the dessert). See the pics I uploaded for Yorkshire puddings, those bowl-shaped bread things. What are they exactly? I'm not sure, but I'm satisfied with classifying them as pure delight. -

Aside from the music, the perfect Sunday night place..
Food and service are great. Especially the English guy and the Italian guy! get the smoked fish salad for a light meal. Probably skip the chips. Really enjoyed the black pudding. Get the gertys mess for dessert!
Onto the music. I'm not a music snob. Objectively (we asked others), the music is horrible. Easy listening instrumental jazz (aka "elevator music") from the 80's. I feel so sorry for the servers. Thank God there are a few Aretha Franklin songs in there and it was slightly noisy ...Or we may have had to leave this adorable unique historic tudor restaurant in the heart of York.
